Trauma
Trauma is a reaction to a perceived threat to personal well-being or the well-being of a loved one. No two people experience trauma the same way and the way trauma is stored in our mind and body is as unique as the individual.
Trauma sticks with us for years and can cause flashbacks, nightmares, agitation, irritability, fear, startle responses, blame, and a myriad of other physical and psychological responses.
Due to the sudden and life-threatening nature of trauma, our brains store trauma differently than normal memories; trauma memories are fragmented and not stored chronologically, which is why triggers occur. A trigger is any stimulus, such as sights, smells, or sounds that causes an unwanted emotional or behavioral response.
